Spice FAQs

What is "Spice Level"?
Spice Level is a simple rating that describes the intensity of romantic or sexual content in a book, from no spice to explicit.
Does Epigramm detect spice level automatically?
No. Spice level is subjective and not included in ebook metadata. Epigramm lets you quickly choose a rating that matches your experience.
What spice scale does Epigramm use?
A clean, universal 5-level scale:

1 - 🌢 Closed Door / No Spice
2 - 🌢🌢 Low Spice
3 - 🌢🌢🌢 Moderate Spice
4 - 🌢🌢🌢🌢 High Spice
5 - 🌢🌢🌢🌢🌢 Explicit Spice

(You can also disable the spice field entirely if you do not want to use it.)
Can I change the spice level after reading?
Yes. You can edit it anytime. Readers often adjust their rating after finishing the book.
Why include spice level?
Because for many readers, especially romance readers, spice level is part of choosing the right book for their mood. It also helps you avoid books that do not match your preferences.
Is spice level visible to other people?
Only if you choose to share it. By default, all your metadata stays private.
Can I filter or search by spice level?
Yes. Use search to find books by spice level, like "high spice fantasy" or "closed door romance." This makes it easy to match books to your current mood or reading context (public commute vs. private reading time).
What if spice level changes throughout the book?
Rate based on the overall or highest level. If a book starts closed-door but becomes explicit later, most readers tag it at the higher level to avoid surprises. You're rating your actual experience, not averaging across chapters.
Do I have to rate every book's spice level?
No. This field is completely optional. Many non-romance books won't have any romantic content worth rating. Only use it for books where it's relevant to you.
How do I use spice level to find my next read?
Combine spice level with other metadata in search. Try:

- "moderate spice enemies to lovers" β†’ specific vibe
- "closed door historical romance" β†’ clean romance in a favorite genre
- "explicit fantasy unread" β†’ filter by spice + genre + status

This makes spice level a practical tool for choosing books that fit your current mood, reading environment, or comfort level.
What if I don't use spice levels at all?
You can disable the spice level field entirely in settings. If this metadata doesn't matter to you, turn it off and it won't appear in your book details or library views.
