Privacy & Data Management FAQs

What data is private by default?
Everything. Your library, reading stats, notes, highlights, genres, tropes, spice levels, tags, and all other metadata are private unless you explicitly choose to share them. Epigramm views your reading life as personal intellectual property, not public content.
Can I control what I share?
Yes, with granular control. Share specific books, stats, or reading lists as you choose. Share publicly, with select friends, or keep everything private. You can also share anonymized stats (pages read, completion rates) without revealing which books you're reading.
Does Epigramm sell my reading data?
No. Epigramm does not sell your reading data, behavioral patterns, or any other information to third parties. You are the customer, not the product. The business model is straightforward: you pay for the service, we provide value and protect your privacy. We want for you what we want for ourselves.
Can I export all my data?
Yes. Export your complete library, notes, highlights, stats, and metadata in standard formats (JSON, CSV, markdown) at any time. Your data isn't locked in — you can take it with you if you decide to leave or want backups.
What happens to my data if I delete my account?
We will retain your notes and highlights for a short period of time in case you decide to come back (time period TBD, we welcome suggestions). Before deletion, you'll have the option to export everything. After the time period expires, we'll retain no copies, backups, or aggregated data derived from your account. When you're gone, you're gone.
Does Epigramm use my data to train AI or algorithms?
No. 100% no. Epigramm may use aggregated, anonymized data to improve features (like better genre categorization or reading pace predictions), but never uses individual reading data, notes, or highlights for machine learning. This app is built based on what we want for ourselves, and we want the same for our users.
Where is my data stored?
On secure, encrypted servers with industry-standard protections. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Epigramm uses established cloud providers with strong security track records, and all data handling complies with relevant privacy regulations.
Can other users see what I'm reading?
In Epigramm there's no default social feed, no public profile, no "currently reading" broadcasts. If you want to share quotes from your reading with friends, a book club, or social you can, but you choose exactly what to share and with whom. Likewise with your reading statistics.
What about sensitive content in my library?
All content is treated as private and personal. Romance novels, political books, self-help, religious texts — whatever you read stays between your devices. No judgments, no leaks, no recommendations that reveal what you're reading to others.
Can I hide specific books from my stats?
Yes. Mark books as "private" to exclude them from shared stats while keeping them in your library. Useful for professional reading, guilty pleasures, or books you're reading for research that skew your genre preferences.
How do I review or change my privacy settings?
Privacy settings are accessible from your account page. Review what's shared, revoke specific sharing permissions, adjust visibility settings, or lock down everything with one click. Changes take effect immediately.
